Pastel Portrait...Art Students' League of New York

20" x 26" pastel on grey canson paper (smooth side)

I took a workshop in portraiture at the Art Students' League conducted by Ellen Eagle. The model was wonderful...what a luxury to have someone stay stock still for 15 hours. It was a joy to be at the League...most of the work done there is representational. The atelier has been in existence 137 years...Georgia O'keefe, Edward Hopper and Charles Burchfield  are some of my heros who studied there. The only drawback is that the students are packed in...I worked large because I was standing so close to the model....however I couldn't get the distance to really see what I was doing. Ellen suggested that I view turn around and view both the model and my image in a hand merror. A great tip.

  1. I've always wanted to visit the Art Students' League - the building looks so fantastic. When I visited Philadelphia in 2006, I was able to get inside UArts/PCA and have a look around. So disappointing! Everything had been turned into dormitories, no studios, none of the magic of peering in on a class...
Your portrait is marvelous. How long was the workshop?

  2. The workshop met for three hours, five days. I am signed up to draw on Saturdays for 6 hours. I probably would have been better off at ASL when I was young...though I would have to get a BA elsewhere.

Too bad about PCA building being converted to dorms...Perhaps it is fitting. My understanding is, that it was originally a mental institution...Dust to dust?
