Irises and lilies from memory

8" x 10" oil on canvas board
I drew the cartoon a week or two ago....the flowers were long gone, so I painted this using the cartoon as well as referencing the other paintings I did of these species of flowers. There is a dream like quality to memory work....one only remembers what is essential. I do think I need to work on shadows more.

Cartoon for Irises and Lilies 3

8" x 10" Graphite and paper
This is the cartoon for a painting I am starting today. I may do two of theses (iris permitting...they don't last very ling) Won't know until I get there.

Cartoon for Irises and Lilies 2

6" x 6" Cartoon for painting Irises and Lillies 2
I have started to really focus on proportions and placement in my cartoons. It doesn't solve all problems for painting...but at least placement and proportions are more accurate.

Irises and Lilies

6" x 6" oil; on gesso board
I bought a beautiful bouquet of irises and a stem of lilies...these may be Casa Blancas, the fragrance is just divine. I am beginning to get the hang of painting on a slick surface. I sanded the board before I painted...there are still some brush strokes from where I applied a burnt umber ground. I may start using thin burnt umber oil on the ground.

Lillies and Irises

Oil on Gesso board  12" x 14"
I have been experimenting with a new painting surface. because of the lack of tooth, i have been using more oil in my paint, and using dry-brush a fair  part of the time. I don't think I have mastered it...but this is a start. I will need to sand my boards after I've tinted them. I also believe I need to work slower.
